Born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, in July 1886, Fred signed on in July 1915 in Windsor, Ontario.
An hospital orderly by trade, Fred originally attested into the 33rd Battalion on July 2nd, 1915.
206 men of the 33rd Battalion were transferred to the 4th CMR mainly in May and June of 1916, with Fred finding himself in the field with the 4th CMR on May 8th, 1916.
At the time of Fred's loss, on October 1st, 1916, the 4th CMR was involved in costly actions attacking Regina Trench, in which some 70 men were lost.
Pte. Fred Wingate is one of 15 men of the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles who are known to lie at rest in the Regina Trench Military Cemetery, Grandcourt, France.
